Thanks for tuning into my new blog post today. Today I'll be talking about different vocabulary terms and how they all associate with each other. I'll also post a little mind map that I made and it'll show you definitions of each term and how they are all connected.
With math, usually terms all have something in common with another term. An example would be how types of data has types of graphs inside the data. Data can be displayed in many different forms like a bar graph, a pictograph graph, or a dot-plot graph. I'll go into those a little bit more in a second. Some terms have many different definitions.
The definitions I want to get into are the types of graphs. There are hundreds of different graphs you can use for any type of data, but I'll talk about the two most popular ones. The first type of graph I want to talk about is a bar graph. Everyone basically knows what a bar graph is. The official definition of a bar graph is: "a chart that uses bars to show comparisons between categories of data." There are two types of bar graphs: regular bar graphs that have horizontal bars on the horizontal axis and a vertical bar graph (where the bars are on the vertical axis).
When using a bar graph, you have to label each part of it. You have to label what you are comparing (an example would be the data of how many kids in a class like orange, yellow, blue, or green). On the horizontal axis would be labeled, "Colors". On the vertical axis would be labeled, "Number of Kids in the Class." If you have ten kids in your class, you would make even marks along the vertical axis that correspond to the number of kids who liked each color. The last label you would need in your bar graph is the title of the graph. The title of the graph would be at the top. Here's an example:
The second type of graph is a pie chart or a circle graph. The definition of a pie chart or circle graph is: a circular chart divided into sectors, each sector shows the relative size of each value. With a pie chart or circle graph, you have a certain number of data you want to organize. Usually people use pie charts or circle graphs for showing a percentage of some sort of data. An example would be showing the percentage of how much your paycheck goes to certain things like rent, food, clothes, etc. Here's an example of a pie chart/circle graph:
Here's my mind map of different terms in math and how they associate with each other:
When I was researching different types of terms for math, I stumbled upon this website that shows illustrations of the word and the definition. Here's the link. I hope you guys learned a little bit today about math terms and graphs. Tune in soon for my next blog post. Bye!!
